Complex nutritional labelling requirements for imported food and drinks in Canada
Trade barrier summary
Food and drink products require specific nutritional labelling in Canada. The requirements can be difficult for importers to understand and meet.
The Canadian Compendium of Nutritional Facts requires nutritional labels to include (but are not limited to):
- cholesterol levels
- sodium
- iron
- suggested serving sizes
- other components
There is also a requirement to translate nutritional information into Canadian French, which is different to the French language used on European labelling. This can be complex because some ingredient and scientific terms are not commonly known.
