Government procurement and supplies management act in Thailand affecting UK exporters
Trade barrier summary
In August 2017, the government procurement and supplies management act became effective. The act displays discriminatory treatment between domestic and overseas goods and is not transparent.
The act also has sector-specific impacts:
- in the construction sector, overseas bidders must have a foreign business license and half of its authorised directors must be Thai nationals
- in the pharmaceutical sector, the Thai Government Pharmaceutical Organisation has gained additional responsibilities for the procurement of generic pharmaceutical products - this disadvantages multinational pharmaceutical companies that produced the original drug.
Sectors affected
- Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology
