Lifted ban on UK beef exports to Japan opens up market to UK lamb
Trade barrier summary
The UK has not previously applied for access to export lamb to Japan. Beef exports were restricted due to the outbreak of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in 1996. Lamb is registered in the same category as beef, so when the UK sought to remove the ban for UK beef, it also applied for lamb.
Following Japan's lifting of the ban on UK beef in January 2019, the UK has also been able to export lamb meat to Japan for the first time.
