Restrictions on overseas architectural practices operating in India
Trade barrier summary
Current regulations in India, governed by the Architects Act 1972, do not allow for overseas architects to practice in the market unless they are invited by the government of India in relation to specific projects, or if they are registered as a architect with the Council of Architecture (COA) in India.
Both these conditions have restricted UK architects in establishing offices, providing architectural services and employing Indian and overseas architects in India. These restrictions have resulted in varying interpretations of the law and rules, presenting additional uncertainty for businesses.
